Teach for Pakistan

Unilever Pakistan is a proud supporter of Teach For Pakistan, a nationwide movement of outstanding graduates and young professionals who commit two years to teach in under-resourced schools and go on to become lifelong leaders working from across all fields to expand educational opportunity.

History:In November 2009, Saeed Hadi (Founding Member), began exploring the possibility of adapting the Teach For All model in Pakistan on behalf of the Trustees of The Aman Foundation. The Trustees wanted to make a strategic intervention in the education sector that would contribute towards long-term reform in the country. In January 2010, Teach For All connected Saeed to Khadija S. Bakhtiar (Director, Programmes), then a graduate student at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. Khadija wrote the first draft of the business plan for the organization while she was completing her Masters degree. In March 2010, Amber Zuberi joined the team as Project Coordinator. United by a commitment to better educational outcomes for students in under-resourced schools throughout Pakistan, the team came together to create Teach For Pakistan.

During this time, the team also met with Wendy Kopp, CEO and Founder of Teach For All, and her team to discuss the feasibility of Teach For All’s Theory of Change working in Pakistan. Seeking to adapt the Teach For All model to the local context, the team engaged with a number of stakeholders within the educational sector, at academic institutions and corporations and was encouraged by the favorable responses they received. The team conducted market research and at the end of the process, a final business plan was developed to place the first cohort of Fellows in August 2011.

Together, they began building a network of support for establishing and launching Teach For Pakistan. In September 2010, Farida Zuberi was enlisted to lead Teach For Pakistan and build the movement to drive systemic change within the educational sector in Pakistan.

Mission: Teach For Pakistan is a nationwide movement of graduates and young professionals who will commit two years to teach in under-resourced schools and go on to become lifelong leaders working from across all fields to end educational inequity.

Vision: "We envision a Pakistan where all children -regardless of their socio-economic background – have access to qualify education that allows them to reach their full potential".

Theory of Change:Teach For Pakistan seeks to expand access to quality education by engaging Pakistan’s future leaders in the movement against educational inequity at two levels:

In the short-run, by recruiting highly motivated and talented university graduates and young professionals to teach for two years in under-resourced schools and enabling them to improve educational outcomes such as student achievement and grade completion rates among their students.

In the long-run, by creating a cadre of leaders for a movement to end educational inequity, Teach For Pakistan alumni will work from within and outside the field of education with a lifelong commitment to ensure that all children have equal opportunities to learn, grow and improve their life prospects.
